How CS2 Case Odds Work
Every Valve case uses the same tier odds: Mil-Spec (blue) about 79.9%, Restricted (purple) 16%, Classified (pink) 3.2%, Covert (red) 0.64% and the knife or glove tier 0.26%. StatTrak versions are a one-in-ten chance within each tier. Those numbers never change between cases; what changes is which skins sit in each tier and what they are worth.
That means the value of a case is decided almost entirely by its Covert and knife tier. A case with a Covert AK-47 or AWP that trades in the hundreds and a knife set that includes high-value finishes is a better case to open than one whose Coverts are forgettable, even at identical odds.
The second variable is case price. Cases in the active weekly drop pool are plentiful and cheap. Cases that have dropped out of the pool get scarcer and more expensive every year, which raises the cost of each opening without changing the odds.
What Changed in 2026
Valve's 2026 drop-pool update moved several older cases into a discontinued tier and changed which rare items can still drop from them. The practical effect: the cheapest cases to open are the current active-pool cases, and the discontinued ones are now collectibles rather than cases to open. Check the in-game drop pool before buying anything in volume, because the list shifts with each operation and major update.
Cases Worth a Key in 2026
| Case | Why | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Fever Case | Current-pool case with a strong Covert tier and the Kukri knife set | Anyone opening for the first time: cheap and modern |
| Gallery Case | Current-pool case whose Covert and Classified skins are among the most used in matchmaking | Players who want a skin they will actually use |
| Kilowatt Case | Kukri knife introduction case; broad, popular Covert tier | Knife hunters on a budget |
| Revolution Case | Covert tier with high-demand AK and M4 finishes; still cheap | Value per key |
| Dreams & Nightmares Case | Community-designed, several Coverts that hold value | Collectors and traders |
| Recoil Case | Glove case with the full glove set; Coverts are weaker | Glove hunters |
| Fracture Case | Older but still common; Covert tier holds its price | Cheap openings with a decent ceiling |
| Chroma 3 / Gamma 2 (discontinued) | Classic knife finishes (Doppler, Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth); case price now high | Only if you want the specific knife set and accept the case cost |
When a Site Case Beats a Valve Case
A third-party site case is a weighted draw from a pool of real skins the site holds. The site sets the odds and publishes them, so a $5 site case can offer a 2% knife chance where a Valve case offers 0.26% at roughly $3 for key and case. The trade-off is trust: you are relying on the site's roll and its stock rather than Valve's.
If you want a specific Valve knife finish, open the Valve case or buy the knife outright. If you want the best chance per dollar at any knife and are happy to withdraw to Steam, a site case on Hellcase, Key-Drop or Clash.gg is better value. Our case opening sites page ranks them on odds transparency and withdrawal speed.
Should You Open Cases at All?
On average, no. Buying the skin you want on a marketplace is cheaper than opening for it, and the key cost alone exceeds the median drop. People open cases for the chance of a big hit and the entertainment, which is fine if it is budgeted like any other gambling. If you are going to open, pick a case from the table, buy keys in bulk at the Steam price and stop when you planned to.
FAQ
What are the odds of a knife in a CS2 case?
About 0.26% per opening, the same for every Valve case. StatTrak knives are a tenth of that.
What is the best case to open for a knife?
A cheap current-pool case whose knife set you like: Fever or Kilowatt for the Kukri, Revolution or Fracture for classic finishes at a low case price.
Are discontinued cases worth opening?
Rarely. The case itself now costs as much as several openings of a current case, and the odds are identical.
